California the "golden" state has in fact turned into California the burning state. Here in the normally beautiful Gilroy area, smoke and haze fills our valley again, creating some of the worst air pollution I've seen since living here for 8 years. Add the high outside temperatures, and we have a real health mess, especially for folks who have asthma. While recent lightning strikes appear to have started most of the hundreds of fires currently still burning in the state, there are some fires started by crazies who have a profound pathological sickness to enjoy the misery of others in every possible way. Am I incorrect, but don't we see more and more of this kind of pathology creeping into every aspect of our modern American culture? It well demonstrates the fruit of the 1960's saying "If it feels good, do it!" The great god of Self has been elevated so much in American culture that individual duty, truth and responsibility are in many ways dead, rotting in a societal corpse of relativism. America the Beautiful has in may ways, I'm afraid, become America the Ugly.
